Label & Tag Printing for FMCG and Retail Brands in India
Labels and tags are the most underestimated print product in the FMCG and retail supply chain. A product label must communicate brand identity, meet regulatory requirements (FSSAI, BIS, Legal Metrology), resist handling and moisture, and survive shelf life — all for a fraction of a rupee per unit. Getting labels right requires choosing the correct substrate, adhesive, print process, and supplier. This guide covers all of it for Indian brands sourcing label printing.
Types of Labels and Tags
Self-Adhesive Product Labels
The most common label type — printed on a release liner and peeled off for application. Used for jars, bottles, boxes, tubes, and most consumer packaged goods. Available in paper, BOPP (polypropylene), and polyester substrates.
Shrink Sleeve Labels
PVC or PETG film that shrinks around the container when heated. Provides 360-degree coverage. Common in beverages, personal care, and food products. Requires a separate shrink application machine at the production line.
Hang Tags
Card or paper tags attached to products via string, pin, or seal. Standard for apparel, footwear, and accessories. Often carry barcode, size, price, and care instructions. Printed on 300–400 GSM board.
Barcode and Price Labels
Thermal-transfer or direct-thermal labels for in-store price marking, inventory management, and dispatch. These need barcode readability as the primary criterion — substrate and adhesive must be compatible with the scanner environment.
Security / Tamper-Evident Labels
Labels that leave a "VOID" residue or tear visibly if removed. Used for authentication, warranty seals, and pharmaceutical packaging. Require specialized substrates.
Durable / Weatherproof Labels
For outdoor products, industrial equipment, or items exposed to water, heat, or chemicals. BOPP and polyester substrates with appropriate adhesive are standard. Cannot be printed on standard paper label stock.
Label Substrates: Which to Choose
| Substrate | Best For | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Paper (coated) | Dry goods, general retail, books | Not waterproof, tears under moisture |
| BOPP (clear/white) | Bottles, food, personal care | Requires UV or solvent ink; higher cost |
| Polyester (PET) | Industrial, outdoor, chemicals | Higher cost, limited hand-apply feel |
| PVC | Shrink sleeve, outdoor signage | Environmental concerns; shrink requires equipment |
| Kraft/recycled paper | Natural/organic brands, artisan products | Limited colour vibrancy, not waterproof |
Regulatory Requirements for Labels in India
Indian labels must comply with multiple regulations depending on the product category. Missing a mandatory declaration can lead to rejection at retail or regulatory action.
FSSAI (Food Safety)
Food product labels must include: product name, ingredient list, allergen declarations, nutritional information, net weight, manufacturer details, FSSAI license number, manufacturing and best-before dates, batch number, and MRP (inclusive of all taxes).
Legal Metrology
All packaged commodities sold in India must display net quantity, MRP (including taxes), manufacturer name and address, and month/year of manufacture. The MRP must be printed on the label — a sticker over the printed price is permitted but reduces brand quality perception.
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)
Products under BIS certification must display the ISI mark in approved format on the label. This mark has specific size and placement requirements.
Pharmaceutical Labels
Drug labels are regulated by CDSCO and require batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date, storage conditions, and prescribing information in specific formats. Tertiary packaging must match the primary label data exactly.
Minimum Order Quantities for Labels
Label printing MOQs depend on the print process:
- Digital label printing: 100–500 labels per SKU (ideal for new products, seasonal variants, small brands)
- Flexographic printing: 1,000–5,000 labels per SKU (standard for growing FMCG brands)
- Offset label printing: 5,000–10,000 labels per SKU (best per-unit cost for established products)
At Rajesh Company, our standard label MOQ is 500 units. We can accommodate lower MOQs for proofing and new product launches.
Hang Tags for Apparel and Accessories
The hang tag is the brand's voice at the point of sale. For apparel, it carries the brand logo, product name, size, price, care instructions, country of manufacture, and fiber composition. For footwear, it includes size, colour code, and material. For accessories, it often includes authenticity claims and brand story.
High-quality hang tags use:
- 300–400 GSM art card or textured board
- 4-colour printing with matte or gloss lamination
- Spot UV on logo for premium feel
- Die-cut shapes for differentiation
- String attachment with a safety pin or rivet seal
Fast fashion brands order 50,000–500,000 hang tags per season. Premium labels order smaller quantities with more elaborate finishes.
